Summary:
The stages of Mitosis and Meiosis had been introduced the prior day. Students will begin with a question of the day that will be counted as part of a homework assignment (grades on questions of the day will be added throughout the unit and totaled to equal one homework assignment) entailing the students to identify whether this cell is in mitosis/meiosis, what stage it is, and why they believe this to be true. After these are collected we will quickly discuss the answer, clearing up any misconceptions the students may have. We will then begin class with a Pre-Lab, which will involve the use of microscopes. The students have already had experience using microscopes throughout the year and shouldn't need any review on the parts and how to use it. Students will then be separated into groups of 2 and given a number of slides containing cells. The students will then be asked to identify which stage each cell is in and explain the reasons why they know this to be true. Students will also have to decipher between whether or not the cell is a plant or animal cell, and draw a picture that corresponds with what they see labeling key parts. If time permits, a Post-lab will be held reviewing the lab especially the key stages and structures that differentiate mitosis from meiosis and plant cells from animal cells.
Objectives:
Students will use microscopes to distinguish stage of mitosis and meiosis/plant or animal cell
Students will produce an explanation in their own words of what is occurring at each stage
Students will distinguish the different stages of mitosis and meiosis by drawing
